A 53-year-old local man is still in police custody after being arrested in connection with the incident.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “Officers would like to hear from anyone who was in the area and witnessed anything in the time leading up to when the woman was found.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact North East Leeds CID via 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”

The police said they had been called to Mexborough Grove by the ambulance service, who were attending to the injured woman.

It was not clear how the paramedics had come to discover the woman.

Coun Mohammed Rafique (Lab, Chapel Allerton) said he would be happy to speak to any residents who had been left alarmed by yesterday’s events.

He also said he hoped the incident would not be seen as a return to the troubled times of Chapeltown’s past. “The area has really moved on in the last 10 or 15 years,” said Coun Rafique. “It’s definitely changed and is now a nice place to live and work.”
