Jockey fire-deaths landlord in dock

THE owner of a block of flats where two top young jockeys died in an arson attack appeared in court yesterday accused of life-threatening fire safety breaches.

Landlord Alan Foster, 65, faces 17 charges following the blaze in September 2009 which killed Jamie Kyne, 18, and Jan Wilson, 19, at Buckrose Court, Norton, Malton, North Yorkshire.

Jamie, from Claregalway, Galway, and Jan, of Forfar, Angus, both rode for separate stables in North Yorkshire.

It is alleged Foster, a local businessman, failed to maintain fire alarms, fire fighting equipment, fire detection equipment and emergency lighting on various dates between September 2009 and August 2011.

He is also accused of putting lives at risk by failing to ensure that his premises could be safely evacuated in the event of a fire.

Foster, who still lives in Buckrose Court, was released on unconditional bail to appear at York Crown Court on October 1.

His caretaker Peter Brown, 37, was convicted of manslaughter in 2010.
