Grimsby woman spat in face of bin collector and shouted 'Covid' at him

Police are investigating after a woman spat in the face of a waste collection worker in Grimsby on Friday morning.

The incident happened at 8.25am in Eleanor Street. A woman reportedly chased the bin crew and hurled abuse at them. She then spat in the face of one of the workers and shouted ‘Covid’ at him.

North East Lincolnshire Council reported the incident to Humberside Police who are investigating and checking CCTV of the incident.

The council pointed out that the workload of waste collection and recycling has increased during the pandemic as more rubbish is being disposed of due to lockdowns and home working.

An spokesperson said:

“Our waste and recycling crews are here to help and have the right to work in a safe environment. We will not tolerate any abuse directed at our staff.

“It is not acceptable that people who are working hard to keep vital services going are being threatened and abused.

“We will not tolerate violence, physical aggression or verbal abuse of our staff.

“Behaviour like this is disgraceful, especially given the difficult circumstances our crews are working through.”
