Senior officers described the violence as “appalling” and all the worse because teenagers and men in their 50s were involved.

One police officer suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle when he was knocked to the floor beneath a police horse.

Another officer suffered a foot injury. A football supporter from Wales was knocked unconscious and required hospital treatment.

Superintendent Vernon Francis said officers and supporters came under missile attack before and after the game. He called the trouble “sheer wanton violence”.
