Family in appeal for return of Bernard, 84

THE daughter of an 84-year-old man who went missing in Huddersfield wearing pyjamas and a sheepskin coat today made an emotional appeal for his return.

Bernard Hallas was last seen on a bus from the suburb of Bradley, near his home, into Huddersfield at 8.20pm on Tuesday 18th December.

The bus went into the centre of Huddersfield where Mr Hallas then caught another bus to Marsden. At the end of its route, at around 10:15pm, the bus went back into Huddersfield with Mr Hallas still on board.

He was last sighted on CCTV at around 11pm on Wakefield Road, Aspley.

Today his family have made a plea for his safe return home and also for people who see him to offer him some help.

His daughter, Andrea Gill, said: “We just want you to come home Dad so we know you are safe. Everyone is very worried about you and we are looking everywhere for you.”

Mr Hallas has 10 grandchildren and they are currently out looking for him.

Ms Gill said: “They just all want granddad home so they can enjoy Christmas with him. We won’t be able to enjoy Christmas if he isn’t with us. The weather is horrible at the moment and it’s no place for you to be.”

She urged anyone who sees Mr Hallas to ring police immediately, adding: “If you see my Dad please don’t ignore him but ask him in for a cup of tea. He is a lovely, gentle old man. Then call the police who will do the rest.

“I can’t describe just how worried we are about him – if it was your Dad out there in the cold and wet then you would be very worried.”

Mr Hallas is described as white, around 5’5” tall, clean shaven, frail and with whispy grey hair. He was wearing blue check pyjamas, a brown sheepskin coat, a brown hat and black shoes.

Det Insp Philip Benson of Huddersfield CID said: “We are growing ever more concerned about the welfare of Bernard Hallas and we are appealing to members of the public to assist us in finding him.

“Mr Hallas suffers from several medical conditions and has no medication with him to treat these.

“He was last seen on travelling on a bus on Tuesday night in Huddersfield and we need to hear from anyone who may have seen him since.

“I would urge anyone does see him to take him into the warmth and contact the police on 999 immediately.”
