Counter-terrorism unit arrests two men in Yorkshire and the Humber

Officers from the North East Counter-Terrorism Unit have arrested two people in Yorkshire and the Humber as part of an operation relating to alleged terrorism offences under Italian legislation.

A 38-year-old man was arrested in Hull this morning, along with a 52-year-old man in Sheffield.

A 32-year-old man was also arrested in Derby, as well as a 33-year-old man in Birmingham.

A spokesman from Humberside Police said: “We understand that people may be concerned following today’s arrests however we would like to reassure communities that today’s activity is as a result of an ongoing investigation which is intelligence led.

“There is no evidence to suggest that communities are at risk.”

Police said the arrests took place under European Arrest Warrants and the suspects will appear at Westminster Magistrates Court.
