Crazy horses

STANDING three metres high, these stainless steel horse heads – called “The Kelpies” – have gone on show outside The Edge in Sheffield.

The sculpture is at Sheffield University’s hall of residence to mark an international conference held by the British Stainless Steel Association and Sheffield Metallurgical and Engineering Association.

The sculptures are 10th-scale maquettes for a 30 metre-high sculpture on the Forth and Clyde Canal near Falkirk.

The Kelpies will be one of the largest equine artworks in the world when completed later this year.

Sheffield-based firm Outokumpu is producing the sheet metal to form the exterior skin of the horses, while SH Structures, based in Sherburn-in-Elmet, has produced the skeletal structure. picture: Scott Merrylees
