Crackdown targets business vehicles

THE latest phase of a police crackdown on rogue drivers in North Yorkshire will target uninsured vehicles being used for business.

North Yorkshire Police officers have launched the offensive in the Selby district to tackle drivers using vehicles for commercial purposes without taking out proper business insurance.

Police have reported a rise in the number of commercial vehicles not properly insured.

Insp Richard Abbott, of the Selby Safer Neighbourhood Team, warned motorists will face prosecution if they are caught driving without valid insurance.

He added: “Officers will stop any vehicle that it appears is being used for a business purpose. If the van does not have the correct insurance, it may be seized and the driver summonsed to court.

“The reason we are now targeting commercial vehicles is that we have seen an alarming number of commercial vehicles on the district’s roads who don’t have the proper insurance, which would have serious consequences if they collide with an innocent member of the public.”

The operation is the latest phase of a road safety campaign launched at the start of the year.
