Councillors fear for MoD jobs in York

SENIOR York councillors are to write to Defence Secretary Liam Fox appealing for civil service jobs to stay at the city's Imphal Barracks

After it emerged a further 200 civil service jobs could be under threat.

The Defence Vetting Agency, established about a decade ago at the barracks in Fulford Road, currently vets new Ministry of Defence staff.

But the Government is consolidating its work with another vetting provider, FCO Services, based in Milton Keynes and London and is undertaking a review.

The announcement comes after recent concerns were raised that as many as 80 jobs could be lost at Imphal with proposals to transfer the 15 Brigade HQ to Catterick Garrison.

The leaders of the three main political parties in York have agreed to a joint letter appealing for the jobs to be kept in the city.
