Council using web to pass on news

An e-newsletter has been launched by a cash-strapped council to replace its free newspaper that was ditched in a bid to cut costs.

North Yorkshire County Council’s free monthly newsletter, North Yorkshire Now, will cost the authority around £10,000 a year to produce.

It is a fraction of the £460,000 it cost to run the NY Times, which was distributed to 270,000 homes across the county until it was axed earlier this year.

Coun Carl Les, North Yorkshire’s executive member for the chief executive’s group, said: “The county council is committed to informing residents and community partners of the latest developments in our services. Although we ceased publication of NY Times in order to make necessary savings, we believe this e-newsletter will be welcomed as a very cost-efficient means of continuing to keep people up-to-date with the wide range of work we undertake to make North Yorkshire a safe and rewarding place to live and work.”

The council is faced with making £69m in savings over the next four years as it battles to combat a dramatic reduction in funding from the Government.
