Contractor chosen to build new fire stations

The stations will be built at Parkway and Birley Moor by the firm after it was awarded a £5m contract by South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue (SYFR) through the Yorbuild framework.

Parkway Fire Station will be a two-storey facility staffed by firefighters 24 hours a day. The steel-framed building will include a range of sustainability features such as air source heat pumps, solar-heated water and photovoltaic cells.

Single-storey Birley Moor Fire Station will be staffed part-time and include appropriate sustainability measures.

Both buildings will provide more modern facilities for firefighters to train and prepare for work.

The planning application for both sites was submitted in August, and the contractor aims to start on site in January 2014.

Both stations will be completed for operational use from April 2015.

Chief fire officer James Courtney said: “These two new fire stations are an integral part of our plans to provide the best possible emergency fire cover to Sheffield.

“The appointment of contractors is a significant milestone in this project, and I look forward to the opening of two top-class fire stations in the near future.”

BAM was also this year named preferred bidder for a £10m contract to build primary schools in Shirecliffe and Fir Vale for Sheffield City Council.
