Coastal town tops table for car crime

NEW police figures have revealed that the East Riding's car crime hot spot is Bridlington.

Humberside Police have received 42 reports of vehicles being broken into in the resort since January 1. In second place was Willerby (24) followed by Hessle (21).

There have been eight offences in the village of Sproatley and seven in South Cave.

In all, 306 cars have been broken into since the start of the year, and the police are urging motorists not to leave valuables on display.

In 13 cases vehicles were stolen after being left unlocked – and another 16 were taken using the owner's key.

Police say thieves are targeting quieter, rural areas.

Raiders made off with tools and power tools in nearly a quarter of the break-ins. There were 49 thefts of sports equipment and 29 handbags stolen. In 33 cases number plates were removed.

Det Insp Nigel Sawyer, from Bridlington CID, said: "Officers often face the task of dealing with offenders who travel specifically to our smaller, quieter areas.

"We have had success in tackling this and have arrested several people recently who we believe have been involved in the offences."
