City police station aids community strategy

A NEW police station has opened on the outskirts of York in a drive to reintroduce officers into the heart of North Yorkshire's communities.

The new facility at Clifton Moor will enable a faster response to incidents as the team of officers serving the area was previously based at Fulford Road police station close to the city centre.

The development will mean that officers are now just minutes away from their beat areas and can patrol on cycles.

Assistant Chief Constable Sue Cross said: "This new police station is right in the heart of a residential and a business community giving us a great opportunity to provide the service both residents and businesses deserve.

"The location puts our officers right where they need to be in order to maximise the service they can offer to our communities and help them forge stronger and long-lasting relationships with them.

"This new facility is a real asset to the force and I am sure it will be well received by everyone in the community."

The new station, on Stirling Road, is part of North Yorkshire Police's strategy to put neighbourhood policing at the heart of the county's communities. During the past two years, new stations have been opened in Thirsk, Pateley Bridge, Eggborough, New Earswick, Derwent School and Acomb.

However, while the Clifton Moor police station does not have a public counter, its location is aimed at ensuring that officers are available on a more regular basis.

The overall strategy is hoping to build closer links with the public to glean vital intelligence in the fight against crime.

The return to more traditional policing with officers out on the beat is aiming to cut a range of offences including theft, vandalism and alcohol-fuelled anti-social behaviour.
