City defender remembered

Alex Roberts, a member of living history group Ops 39-45, stands in front of the lone fighter plane which safeguarded York’s historic city centre in the Second World War, during a ceremony yesterday 70 years on.

The Hawker Hurricane was flown by French pilot Yves Mahe, who chased off German bombers attacking the city in 1942 as part of what became known as the Baedeker Raids. The plane will be in St Sampson’s Square until May 6.
