Church aims to raise £30,000 for buckled window repairs

FUNDRAISING efforts are well under way at a Barnsley church to raise the £30,000 needed to restore a stained glass window.

The east window at St John the Baptist Church in Dodworth dates back to the 19th century but, over the years, has lost its shape and now is in urgent need of expert repairs.

Canon Stephen Pace said: “The lead in the window has weighted it down somewhat and it has buckled. Rather than having a flat pane of glass, we have convex and concave panes to the extent that they have now pulled away from their frame and the copper ties have corroded.

“At the moment we’re having conservation reports written on the window. Hopefully that will be done in the next week or so and it then follows the normal tender process.

“There are specialist people who do this sort of thing and a handful are based in Yorkshire.”

Canon Pace said £12,000 has already been raised of the £30,000, which he described as “an awful lot of money.”

He added: “The whole glass needs to be taken out, restored and returned to its rightful place. We expect it to take two or three months.”

Those wanting to donate to the fund should make a cheque payable to Dodworth PCC, specify it is for the window, and send it to the church in Green Road, Dodworth, Barnsley.
