Changes to autism services on the cards

PEOPLE affected by autism are being urged to have their say on the future of services for adults in Calderdale.

The National Autistic Society, Calderdale Council and NHS Calderdale are asking people to come along consultation events and have their say in shaping services for adults living in Calderdale.

The sessions, on October 13 and 14, are a chance for adults with autism and their parents and carers to identify priorities for future service development.

The events will be an opportunity for people to share their experiences and influence the way that people with autism access vital diagnosis, support, employment, housing and benefits services.

Colette Hamson, from the Calderdale branch of The National Autistic Society, said: “Taking part in this consultation is a real opportunity for parents, carers and people with autism to make an impact in Calderdale.

“By attending these sessions, we have the opportunity to influence the way that adults with autism get access to the education, support, employment, housing and social opportunities that they want and need. At the Calderdale branch of the NAS, we routinely hear about the experiences of adults with autism – this is a real chance for anyone affected to make their voice heard and influence the way people with autism will access services in the future.”

Mick Mellors, joint head of Mental Health and Learning Disabilities for Calderdale Council and Primary Care Trsut, said: “We would really encourage adults who are affected by autism and their parents and carers to attend these sessions and have their say. The launch of a new national strategy for adults with autism last year was a turning point for adults who are affected by the condition and put autism high up on the government’s agenda.”

Consultation events take place at the Shay Stadium, Halifax. To book your place contact Lisa Pitkeathly on 07917 266339 or email [email protected].
