Carnival takes onmore sober look

The 2010 Rio Carnival has got under way under a zero-tolerance campaign against petty crime and disorder.

The anything-goes atmosphere of the “world’s greatest party” is subject to the city mayor’s year-old crackdown on debauchery.

Beer drinkers will no longer be able to use gutters as a toilet – 100 people have been arrested already – and a club where prostitutes waited is shut.
