Camera to target bus lane drivers

Drivers who ignore bus lane restrictions could be snared by a new camera in Bradford.

The portable bus lane enforcement camera, which can be moved anywhere in the district, will be going live later this month on the outbound section of Bolton Road, towards its junction with the A650 Shipley Airedale Road.

Highways staff have received reports of vehicles ignoring the bus lane restrictions on Bolton Road.

Councillor Andrew Thornton, Bradford Council’s executive member for environment, sport and sustainability, said: “Dedicated bus lanes increase the reliability of bus services and speed up journey times, which encourages the use of public transport. Those drivers who ignore bus lane restrictions risk delaying public transport as well as being a source of frustration and annoyance to law-abiding road users.

Cameras are a cost-effective means of tackling those drivers who don’t comply with the rules.”

Figures show that the installation of bus lane enforcement cameras result in a rapid drop of about 90 per cent in drivers breaking the rules. Ignoring the restrictions will cost drivers £60. The money is used to cover the cost of enforcing the restrictions.
