Burglar alert over unlocked windows

POLICE are warning residents about the dangers of leaving windows and doors unlocked after six reports of burglaries in Hull in 24 hours.

The first theft occurred on Bank Holiday Monday when a thief got into a house on Bessingby Grove through a window while the occupant was asleep.

Other break-ins were reported in Hardy Street, Biggin Avenue, Staines Close, Frome Road and Surbiton Close, with thieves getting away with a haul including a laptop, 42in TV, cash and medication.

A seventh burglary took place in the early hours of Wednesday in Falmouth Street.

Chief Inspector Dave Rawding, Neighbourhood Commander for Hull said: “Insecure burglaries traditionally increase at this time of year as the weather improves. People think nothing of leaving windows open for ventilation or doors open while they pottering in the garden.

“This however can leave homes vulnerable to sneak in burglars who are opportunist criminals on the look out for easy targets.

“This has been highlighted by an unusually high number of reported sneak-in burglaries across Hull over 24 hours. These could have been avoided if the homeowner had ensured that their properties were secure.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0845 60 60 222 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
