The championship winning cricketers were at a Downing Street reception weeks after David Cameron raised eyebrows with his claim that departing MP William Hague was “the greatest living Yorkshire man.”

Mr Cameron said: “I have earlier welcomed the Yorkshire County cricket Club into Downing Street , and I had to go round one by one and say sorry for what I had said about William.

“I got to Dickie Bird, and I told him, don’t worry, I have written personally to Geoffrey Boycott to apologise to him as well.

“Dickie told me ‘he’s the last in a long list.’”
