Boxing gives way to table tennis at club

A SPORTS club which started life during the Second World War is reinventing itself.

Humberside Police Boys' Club, which was established by Hull City Police in Garden Village, east Hull, in 1943, taught generations of youngsters to box.

But recently The City of Hull Amateur Boxing Club threw in the towel, finding its own premises and moving out.

Trustees decided it was time to change tack, and took out the ring to free up space for new activities. This weekend they will launch a new table tennis club.

On Saturday, the High Sheriff of the East Riding of Yorkshire, Adrian Horsley, will be among the guests at the opening.

Trustee John McNally said: "We are hopeful that this is the beginning of much wider use of the Club House for the benefit of all the community."

Two years ago the club was hit by the police's decision to withdraw funding.

Mr McNally, a retired Chief Inspector from Humberside Police, who now teaches A level law at St Mary's College, in Hull, said: "It's been a steep learning curve but we are determined that the original aims of Hull City Police – which was about providing an opportunity for young people – continue.

"My father-in-law loved table tennis in the 1950s and I saw how popular it was at St Mary's.

"When boxing said they were leaving, the trustees decided to give the ring a rest."

He added: "The gym is being redecorated and the floor varnished. It is going to be cheery and welcoming and we want all members of community, organisations and businesses to come in and use this lovely old building."

From this Saturday youngsters between nine and 19 are being offered the chance to try out the sport. It is hoped that league matches will be played by the new St Mary's College Table Tennis Club (East Hull) at the premises when the new season begins in September.

Mr Horsley, along with Hugh Bethell, chairman of the Tribune Trust, will hand over a cheque for 2,000 to the Club House trustees towards the redecoration of the gym.

The first free table tennis session for youngsters will run from 10am until midday, with the second session taking place between 1pm and 3pm.

Funding also came from Hull Council Youth Opportunities Fund for six new table tennis tables.

It is already is the home to judo, martial arts, an over-50s club, a community choir, and a play club. Those interested in the charity and the Club House should call 01482 708104.
