Boss Capello strips scandal-hit John Terry of captaincy

John Terry has been sacked as England captain following the scandal surrounding his alleged affair with a team-mate's ex-girlfriend.

For days the Chelsea footballer has seen a flood of lurid front-page headlines about his business dealings and private life after a high-court gagging order banning the reporting of his relationship with Vanessa Perroncel, left, was lifted.

Yesterday, England manager Fabio Capello announced the 29-year-old, who is married with two children, would be replaced by Rio Ferdinand of Manchester United, with Liverpool's Steven Gerrard as his deputy. The news came shortly after French lingerie model Miss Perroncel, 33 confirmed she would not be selling her story.

In a statement, Terry pledged to "continue to give everything for England".
