Architects draw up designs to restore splendour to park

LOTTERY cash could help restore a neglected park, pavilion and bandstand to the condition it enjoyed in its 1930s heyday after architects began work on a masterplan for the site.

Bentley Park was mainly funded by the village’s miners’ welfare and was designed to be a venue for entertainment, sport and play for residents within attractive gardens.

But its bowling greens are now unused and its bandstand has disappeared, while other parts of the park which were lovingly cared for by previous generations have become overgrown.

Local councillor Charlie Hogarth said the Heritage Lottery Fund had given Doncaster Council £143,000 in “development funding” to work up the masterplan, before a final decision on further funding is made.

He added: “Work is progressing with a promise of brilliant facilities for our residents. It will provide something for all age groups regenerating the heart of our village.”

Councillor Cynthia Ransome, communities spokesman for Doncaster Council added: “These proposals will bring the splendour back to Bentley Park.

“The park has a long history and by restoring some of the features lost over the years like the bandstand and making significant improvements to the park we could create the perfect setting for local people of all ages to relax, socialise and enjoy themselves.”

As part of the improvement scheme, a Friends of Bentley Park group is being formed.
