Apology over tax error

A COUNCIL in Yorkshire has confirmed that it will reimburse any taxpayers who have been hit by bank charges following an error in payments taken by direct debit.

Ryedale District Council admitted yesterday that the council tax payments had been taken too early due to an error linked to the New Year. Payments are usually taken on the first of the month, but because New Year’s Day is a bank holiday the latest instalment was due to be taken tomorrow. However, an administrative error has led to collections being made from bank accounts on Monday.

A spokeswoman stressed all taxpayers using direct debits who have incurred bank charges following the early payment of council tax instalments will be reimbursed, and added the council “unreservedly apologised” for the mattter.
