40,000 clay figures fire imaginations

THE ARTIST behind the Angel of the North is bringing an installation already seen by 1m people to the region.

Anthony Gormley will exhibit Field for the British Isles - a sea of 40,000 terracotta figures huddled together – at 20-21 Visual Art Centre, in Scunthorpe, next March.

Handmade in 1993 by 100 people aged seven to 70, from a community in St Helen’s, Merseyside, it will fill the entire 300 square metre Nave Gallery at 20-21 Visual Arts Centre from March 14 to June 27.

Local residents are being given the chance to work as volunteers alongside technicians from the Arts Council England, to help install the figures. Gormley’s famous sculptures of the human form also include Another Place consisting of 100 cast iron sculptures of the artist’s own body, facing towards the sea at Crosby Beach near Liverpool.
