1,000 vehicles stopped in crackdown

DRIVERS of uninsured and untaxed vehicles were targeted during operations by Special Constables in West Yorkshire.

More than 1,000 vehicles were stopped and checked and 34 uninsured or untaxed vehicles taken off the road during the weekend dedicated to promoting the work of West Yorkshire Police's Special Constabulary.

The specials worked closely with regular officers and colleagues from VOSA, stopping more than 120 taxis – 52 of which were either suspended or given prohibition notices.

Over 400 fixed penalty notices were issued as well as 17 arrests made for offences relating to drugs, immigration, theft, going equipped to steal and being over the prescribed limit.

Nine people were summoned to court for document offences while 19 drivers were ordered to rectify defects on their vehicles.

Chief Insp Jaene Booth, of the force's local policing department, said: "The activities over the weekend prove just how competent and professional our Special Constables are. The operations carried out are extremely important and have been focused in areas where motoring offences are highlighted as priorities by communities."
