Dalby Forest, otherwise known as The Great Yorkshire Forest spans more than 8,000 acres in the heart of the North York Moors National Park. But despite being a haven of “out of the way” tranquillity, it is only 30 mins from Scarborough or Helmsley.

Autumn in Dalby

The forest puts on a show for autumn, with the leaves the most glorious shades of orange, yellow and red. There are 13 walking trails to enjoy, including six accessible trails, meaning everyone can enjoy the wonderful colours across the forest.

As well as the walking trails, cycling trails (from beginners to World Cup level) and running trails are laid out. And every Saturday morning, Dalby offers parkrun.

There are Gruffalo and Superworm trails for the little ones or arts sculptures dotted around. And, Dalby Forest is home to tons of fun at Go Ape.

After all that exertion, the visitor centre offers both hot and cold food, refreshments and daily fresh cakes and goodies.

Dalby has been awarded Dark Skies status, meaning it is one of the darkest spots in the North York Moors, perfect for stargazing with Stargazing events happening between October 22 right through to April 23.

Christmas trees

Dalby Forest will be selling Christmas trees from 26 November to 18 December from the visitor centre. Trees being sold are Spruce and Fir with all sorts of sizes to make the perfect fit for your home.

A long time growing

Dalby Forest was established in 1921 when the then Forestry Commission bought around 1,500 acres of land to develop a forest for timber. But it is believed to go back to 1106 when King Henry I visited the area and designated the land to be a Royal hunting forest. The first original trees planted in 1921 are still standing to this day – spruce trees – and the majority of Dalby forest is Conifer, with broadleaf making up the remainder.
