Susan Worner’s walled garden is part of her gorgeous Georgian home in Marton-cum-Grafton, near Harrogate.

She bought the house, which comes with an attached cottage, 30 years ago when the garden consisted of one apple tree and a few old sheds.

She has since transformed it into a glorious haven filled with plants and trees, some of which she has brought back from her travels. She runs garden and natural history tours across the world.

Her Rosa banksia lutea, a double yellow flowering and evergreen rambler rose, was grown from a cutting given to her in Provence. It likes her light, sandy soil. Her Wisteria and Cornus were bought on a visit to the Eisenhut Nursery on Lake Maggiore in Switzerland and the Italian Cypress was grown from seeds from a cone she collected in the South of France.

Susan has also created a kitchen garden, which is home to young lettuce plants and wild rocket.

She replaced the old apple tree, which died, with three espalier apple trees from RV Roger of Pickering. Other favourite nurseries are Daleside, Killinghall, and Slack Top, an alpine specialist in Hebden Bridge.
