New homes at Park Hill Sheffield set to go on sale

A new phase in the transformation of Sheffield’s iconic Park Hill flats into a vibrant, sought-after place to live and work is underway.Phase two is a joint venture between Urban Splash and Places for People and will include 195 homes and 20,000 sq ft of mixed-use commercial space.The homes will go on sale off-plan on February 29 and comprise of one-bedroom properties from £135,000, two-bedroom flats from £160,000 and three-bedroom apartments from £195,000.Contractors are currently on site with completion due in 2021.

The properties have been designed by Stirling Prize winning architects Mikhail Riches and are a mix of apartments and two-bedroom townhouses.Guy Ackernley, a director of Urban Splash, says: “Our vision was to create a new mid-century quarter for Sheffield and we are well on the way to achieving this.“Phase two is the next chapter in the renaissance of this iconic building, which has been loved, lost and now reborn.“Working with architects Mikhail Riches we have created a new style of living spaces thatare slightly different in their configuration to those in phase one but also reverential to the original design and look.”

One of the earliest examples of Brutalist architecture in Britain and Europe’s largest listed building, Park Hill was constructed between 1957 and 1961 and its streets in the sky were seen as pioneering.Its 995 council homes were arranged around broad decks that were wide enough for milk floats and each deck had access to the ground level. This design also created a quick getaway and the blocks later became a crime hotspot and no-go area before an ambitious regeneration plan was spearheaded by Urban Splash.Phase one is successfully complete with 260 homes, all occupied, along with businesses in the 33,000 sq ft of commercial space. Student accommodation specialists Alumno are well on the way with phase three.Guy Ackernley says: “Judging from those who have registered their interest we expect a busy day on the first day of selling on February 29.
