Pub Of The Week: The Woolpack Inn, Beverley

So you’re in Beverley, you’ve had a bracing walk across the Westwood and now you, quite rightly, fancy a pint and a plate of hot grub.

Before you get in your car and head off, extend the walk down Westwood Road to the Woolpack Inn.

The glorious Georgian avenues around Newbegin are not well served by pubs but the Woolpack is a terrific little one-room boozer that feels like it should be out somewhere in the sticks rather than in the middle of town. The fires are open, the walls wood-panelled and a marvellous little snug can hardly be counted as a second room as it has no door and only holds about five people. Not a lot seems to have changed for several decades, which is good.

It’s a Marston’s pub, so the drink selection is limited to their beers – eight hand-pulled ales as well as the usual lager-y suspects. The Woolpack won a Camra award a couple of years back so at least you know they’re all well kept.

Where the pub scores is the food. It may be typical steak pie, sarnie and fish and chip offerings but everything is fresh, well-made and hearty and all the meat comes from one of the best butchers in the country, James White of Hutton Cranswick.

Surprisingly for such a decent, friendly pub the Woolpack has gone through several hands over the past few years but current landlady Fliss Ogle has been around for 18 months and oversees the popular pie-and-pint nights as well as the weekly quiz.

If all this doesn’t tempt you into the Woolpack then perhaps the revelations that it has board games for the kids and is dog-friendly might just convince you that a trip to Beverley Westwood can turn into a trip back 30 years if you tack on a visit to this refreshingly simple pub.
