Off the shelf

Here is this week's top pick of good value bottles to savour

La Grille Cool Fermented Chenin Blanc 2009, Anjou, Majestic, down from 6.99 to 5.99 until August 30. Don't let the fairly dull name of this wine put you off, it is one of the best Loire cheapies I have tasted. With the soft scent of honeysuckle, crisp, citrussy fruit and just a hint of honey along the way.

Altano Douro, 2007, Portugal, Waitrose, down from 6.49 to 5.15 until July 27. Lighter and softer than many Douro reds and perfect for drinking as the sun goes down, this blend of Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca is packed with cherry and berry fruit with a touch of spice on the finish.

Casillero del Diablo Brut Reserva Sparkling Chardonnay, Limari Valley, Chile, Waitrose, down from 8.99 to 5.99 until July 27. Good value even at its full price, this Chilean sparkler has soft, creamy fruit and a crisp citrus finish. Good enough for any garden gathering.

Bellante Ros, Italy, Marks and Spencer, down from 8.99 to 6.99 until September 5. What's in a name? Until the legislation changed, this used to be called Prosecco Rabosa and then they tried to sneak it in as Rosecco, but now it has been renamed as Bellante and it is just as good as it used to be.
