Brewing up to support hospital

People are being asked to join some famous names and post a ‘mug shot’ on themselves on social media to raise awareness of a Yorkshire cancer hospital’s campaign. Catherine Scott reports.

Yorkshire born and bred cricket legend Darren Gough is supporting his local cancer hospital next month by making “Time for Tea” and asking others to join him for a cuppa.

Former England cricketer and Yorkshire County Cricket Club captain Darren is asking people to pop the kettle on and take time out for a brew with friends and family to help raise vital funds for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.

As a patron of the charity, Darren is encouraging people from across the region to come together for a cuppa and cake during May as part of the charity’s dedicated tea party month, which last year raised £36,000.

Darren is one of the first people to submit a “Mug Shot” for the campaign via social media, which will appear alongside fellow supporters on the cancer charity’s dedicated web page.

“It is an honour to support Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity and make Time for Tea for the benefit of cancer patients across South Yorkshire and beyond,” says Darren.

“As a Yorkshireman myself, I’d urge anyone who enjoys a ‘cuppa and cake’ to pop the kettle on this May and brew up vital funds for this local cause.”

“I’m showing my support by submitting my very own ‘mug-shot’ and asking others to do the same. It’s simple – sign up for Time for Tea or donate by texting BREW15 to 70070, take a selfie with your favourite tea mug and upload to twitter using the hashtags #TimeforTea #mugshot, then nominate your friends to do the same.”

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the Sheffield hospital and exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer.

Throughout 2015 the charity will fund various projects to enable the continued improvement of Weston Park; including the expansion of research studies, improving the way cancer treatments are delivered and supporting the ongoing care provisions of patients and their families affected by cancer.

Last year, over 150 tea parties were organised across the region, from small community gatherings to large scale corporate get-togethers. Supporters included Sheffield United Football Club, The Broadfield Pub and Meynell School who, amongst many others, helped to raise a staggering amount for the cancer charity.

This year, alongside Darren Gough, a host of famous faces are posting their very own “mug shot” on social media and asking others to make Time for Tea and do the same. Downton Abbey’s Allen Leech and fellow cricketer Michael Vaughan are all helping to increase the “tea-total” as is Olympian Sarah Stevenson who supported the campaign last year after both her mum and dad were treated at Weston Park Hospital.

Darren added: “It’s an absolutely brilliant way of raising money for this specialised cancer hospital – and you can do it from your own home.”
