Whitby care home named UK's '˜most outstanding'

Peregrine House in Upgang Lane gained the five-star rating following the unannounced inspection by The Care Quality Commission in October.

There are more than 9,000 care homes in the country. While 43 have been awarded an overall “outstanding”, only Peregrine achieved outstanding across the board which is also a first for the inspectorate.

On inspection day the CQC spoke with residents, staff, visitors and the manager. They inspected bedrooms, laundry rooms, offices and records.

Residents also told inspectors they felt safe and emotionally supported by staff and management.

Debbie Westhead, deputy chief inspector for adult social care in the North, said: “Everyone at Peregrine House should feel proud of the work they do.

“We saw many examples where care was delivered in a thoughtful and respectful way which met with people’s needs.

“It is clear people are at the heart of the service’s values and they strived to ensure people are provided with emotional as well as physical care, and to help them enjoy their lives with little restriction. It is for this and many other reasons why the service has received the highest rating we can give.”

Peregrine House was taken on in 1995 by Dr Kevin and Theresa O’Sullivan. Originally built as a large Victorian home in 1890, significant new building and refurbishment work was undertaken. It was formally opened by the Marquis of Normanby in May 2011. The home is independent and not part of a larger care home group.
