Strangers on a Plane: East Yorkshire woman to use Channel 4 show appearance to raise funds after losing parents to dementia

An East Yorkshire woman whose parents both died with dementia is using her appearance in a reality TV show to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Society.

Louise Bielby, who lives near Beverley, is starring in Channel 4 show Strangers on a Plane, which sees competitive holidaymakers battle to see who can organise the most entertaining 24 hours of holiday fun.

She will be part of a five-person group featured this week – and is organising a party night at her local pub at the end of the month for people to watch the programmes while supporting those affected by dementia.

Louise, 48, said: “It will be an opportunity for everyone to have a bit of a laugh at my expense, so I decided if I’m going to put myself through that I might as well raise some money for Alzheimer’s Society at the same time.”

Louise’s mum Marilyn was diagnosed with dementia when she was 60 and died nine years later. Her father Bobby, who also succumbed to dementia towards the end of his life, was a successful showjumper who trained the horse Mister Softee, ridden to bronze-medal glory by David Broome at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.

Louise said: “It was awful to watch both my parents deteriorate because of dementia...It really is the cruellest of conditions for everyone involved.”
