Lifeline for dementia carers unveiled

A website, believed to be the first of its kind, will give support, information and tips to carers living in South Yorkshire and north Nottinghamshire.

It includes video clips from carers with advice and practical tips about caring for someone with the condition, as well as providing a one-stop source of information about local groups and support.

The venture www.DementiaCarer.net is funded by Sheffield Council, local NHS organisations and other local authorities.

Kath Horner, health improvement principal at Sheffield Council, said: “DementiaCarer.net has been designed specifically for carers by carers, with support from ourselves and other project partners.

“It provides practical tips and advice with videos of carers talking about how they cope with everyday tasks such as washing and dressing the person they care for.

“The carer clips also include useful tips and advice about how to stay positive, active and well – all of which is vital for people providing such important care.”

Trevor Jarvis, of Doncaster, who was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2001 and campaigns to improve the lives of people with the disease which includes a place on the Prime Minister’s Dementia Friendly Communities Champion Group, said: “This is a fabulous resource for people involved with dementia, whether from a personal or professional perspective.

“Carers need all the help they can get and I’m really pleased with the thought that has gone into this resource, it’s packed with useful information.”
