Public clocks in a Yorkshire town could tell the wrong time 'for months' due to coronavirus.

The clocks in Wakefield are set to be moved forward an hour tonight (March 28) in line with the move to British Summer Time.

However Wakefield Council has been told by contractor Engie that due to current restrictions in place, the work to manually alter the time will not go ahead and clocks will not be changed to British Summer time for some months.

A regional spokesman said: “This virus and the measures required to keep people safe are affecting local services in so many different ways and the routine tasks which workers do, which are taken for granted, are now seen for the value they bring to society.

“We all wish the clocks could be put forward a few months this weekend so we can be over this terrible time. Sadly, in Wakefield, the public clocks won’t be going forward at all on Sunday."

The clocks affected include Wilson Street, Castleford, Featherstone Town Hall, Normanton Coronation Clock, Ossett Town Hall, Pontefract Crematorium, Pontefract Town Hall, South Elmsall Market Place and Wakefield Town Hall, Normanton Parish Church, North Featherstone Church and Pontefract St. Giles Church.
