Ten schools from region in bottom 50

Ten primaries from the region are among the bottom 50 in England and 32 among the worst 200 nationally, new Department for Education figures reveal.

Tables published yesterday show the schools with the lowest level of 11-year-old pupils reaching the expected grades in both English and maths

New Road Primary in Sowerby Bridge, near Halifax, had the lowest scores in the region.

Fewer than a quarter of pupils in their final year at the primary school mastered the basics in English and maths, according to the results.

The 23 per cent of children achieving level four in both subjects was the ninth worst score in the country. This was followed by Waterton Juniors and Infants in Wakefield which also had fewerthan a quarter of its children achieve the expected Sats level.

In 12 schools in the region, fewer than a third of pupils achieved level four in English and maths. Ashbrow Juniors in Huddersfield, Micklefield CE School in Leeds, Kinsley Primary in Pontefract and Mill Field Primary in Leeds were all among the Yorkshire schools with the lowest pass rates.

All of these schools were classed as failing to meet the Government’s benchmark as not only were they well short of the 60 per cent target but their pupils have also not kept progress with the national average made between seven and 11. Monkwood Primary in Rotherham was Yorkshire’s lowest ranked performer in a table measuring the “value” schools have added to pupils’ education.
