Kirklees and York both in the top five nationally for A-level results

The data published by the Department for Education includes the performance of post-16 students in A-levels and other qualifications such as the International Baccalaureate.

In a table ranking education authority areas on the average point score of full-time students, Kirklees was ranked third highest in the country and York was ranked fourth.

Heckmondwike Grammar, a selective school, played a key part in this achievement. Each had more than 1,000 post-16 students and were the area’s top performers. Strong performance by both state and private schools in York helped the city’s achieve its high A-level ranking. The Mount, an independent Quaker girls school, was ranked highest in the city followed by Fulford School, a state comprehensive, and then Bootham School, which is also an independent Quaker school.

The third highest ranked Yorkshire area in the A-level table of nearly 150 authorities was Hull. The city’s schools were among the worst performing in the country at GCSE. But the data shows that at A-level schools were among the best.
