WYG chief executive Paul Hamer said: "As we continue to grow our international footprint we are also growing our global competitiveness delivering technical excellence and innovation to all our clients worldwide.

"Whilst many of the world's major economies continue to struggle to recover from economic contraction, China's growth has been sustained and the economy grew 8.7 per cent in 2009, the best performance of all major world economies.

"The new office in China further reinforces our international ambitious combined with the opening of overseas offices in Bosnia & Herzegovina and subsidiary companies in Croatia and South Africa."

Over the next few months WYG will continue to forge relationships with China's government agencies, companies, institutes and universities, while working with the CBBC in setting up the new office, anticipated to open in May.

Mr Hamer added: "Shanghai is one of China's largest and most influential cities for central finance and trade and is aiming to be a global finance hub and international shipping centre in the near future. This backdrop gives the new office the grounding for WYG to develop its services in the Shanghai region and across the growth markets of central and western China.

"Here, WYG is well positioned to provide the technology in support of China's key policy direction towards a cleaner environment and more sustainable urbanisation.

"In addition to our new office openings we recently announced our largest ever international programme in the Western Balkans which comprises a four-year €15m transport & infrastructure upgrade funded by the European Commission, along with an extension to an established major infrastructure project under our management, to six years and additional EU funding of €15.1m. We also provided technical expertise in Poland helping the country to upgrade its roads in preparation to host the Euro 2012 Football Championships. Over the past 12 months, we have added over 40 new international projects with a combined valued in excess of €73m to our portfolio.

"Looking to the future we intend to build on these successes and continue delivering world class solutions and value for clients on schemes around the world."
