What the Dickens? BHP lands in history house

YOU might think that Charles Dickens had little in common with the legal profession, and you would be right.

Aside from the fictional David Copperfield’s spell in a law firm, one of the legal world’s few links to the author can be found in St John’s Lane, Halifax.

Now the base of Halifax law firm BHP Clarksons, it was also once home to Dickens’ wife, Catherine Hogarth.

The new office based at St John’s House has placed the firm closer to the town centre,

Partner at the firm, Jonathan Dixon said: “St John’s House is more convenient for clients and has the benefit of a public car park right next door. Our firm has a long history in Halifax and we’re delighted to be in our new building which is also part of the town’s heritage.”

The firm, which was previously known as Clarksons, joined forces with North East-based law firm BHP in 2008.

Today, it has 200 members of staff and 34 partners.

BHP Clarksons was previously based in Harrison Road in Halifax.

BHP Law also has offices in Newcastle, Durham, Darlington, Teesside, North Shields and Newton Aycliffe,

The new Halifax office was officially opened by Calderdale’s Deputy Mayoress, Jennifer Pearson.
