Training company secures deal in Oman

SHE Knows Health & Safety has secured a four-year contract to help train 5,000 petrochemical workers in the Sultanate of Oman.

The Hull-based business, which employs 15 people and has a turnover of more than £1m, said the deal to provide health, safety and environment courses and refreshers for Petroleum Development Oman, Oman’s largest oil producer, was worth a six-figure sum. It declined to disclose the exact value of the contract.

The work is to be carried out through SHE Knows Health & Safety’s formal partner in Oman, the Knowledge Grid.

The oil refinery contractors will be given health and safety training until 2016, including training covering inductions, fire, hydrogen sulphide and health and safety risk awareness, and training for supervisors including accidents, radioactive material and confined spaces.

As the contractors are from all parts of the world, SHE Knows Health & Safety will produce course material in native languages including Hindi and Arabic, as well as English.

Linda Crossland-Clarke, managing director and owner of SHE Knows Health & Safety, said: “It’s taken a lot of negotiating and travel back and forth between Oman and the Humber to secure what is the start of an in-depth health, safety and environment training programme.”

She said the programme will lead to the provision of training for specialist safety staff later in the year.

SHE Knows Health & Safety expects to take on two extra staff in IT and safety training as a result of the contract win, and have one or two full-time trainers in Oman at Knowledge Grid offices. Mrs Crossland-Clarke said: “We are also very optimistic we can use our new and existing contacts in the region to develop sales of our Mission Room training facility.”

The Mission Room is a system which uses 360 degree images, video and sound to create an interactive training environment. It can be erected and taken down on a customer’s site in a day.

From offices in Grimsby and Hull, SHE Knows Health & Safety has already trained construction workers in Oman and provided training to countries including Afghanistan and Zambia. As well working in petrochemicals, SHE Knows Health & Safety is active in other UK and international sectors of business and industry, including construction, energy, marine and mining.
