Slingsby stocks up on salt ready to meet the demands of winter

MOTORISTS dread winter, which explains why business is so brisk at a Yorkshire firm that tries to ensure councils don’t run out of salt.

Workplace equipment provider Slingsby has invested in a salt distribution centre and bagging plant in order to meet demand as more organisations stockpile salt to reduce the chaos caused by snow and ice.

The facility enables Slingsby to provide next- day delivery anywhere in the UK.

As part of the investment, an area at the company’s headquarters in Baildon, West Yorkshire, has been reinforced with concrete in order to store large quantities of bagged salt.

In late 2010, Slingsby sold 3,500 grit bins and more than 10,000 snow shovels and scrapers. Last winter, it’s estimated that councils started the winter with 1.2m tonnes of salt for use on roads. This year Slingsby is expecting to quadruple its salt sales.

Lee Wright, marketing director of Slingsby, which supplies more than 35,000 workplace products, explains: “Every winter there’s a shortage of salt so increasing numbers of organisations are now choosing to buy it early which makes sense because it’s cost-effective and can be stored for long periods of time.”

Slingsby’s winter product range includes shovels and salt spreaders.

The company employs 120 staff and has an annual turnover of between £16m and £17m.
