Sheffield solicitor leads the way to amicable divorce

Janet Simpson, a partner in Simpson Sissons & Brooke is working with Dovetail Divorce Solutions to help couples reach agreement by meeting around the table supported by their own collaboratively trained lawyer, without going to court.

The lawyer advises and draws on specialist expertise, a financial adviser assists in the division of assets and a skilled divorce coach is on hand to provide emotional support.

“I believe communication is paramount in the event of any relationship breakdown but understand that it can be difficult when couples part,” said Mrs Simpson, who has almost 30 years experience as a family lawyer.

“I firmly believe the collaborative process works as it enables couples to control costs and have the support of their chosen lawyer when they sit around the table to try to sort out their differences.”

One of the key advantages of the service is that it is offered at a fixed price following the trend in other private client legal work such as conveyancing, wills and probate.

She added that being able to see the whole process as it happens round a table rather than each party meeting with their lawyer and then passing paperwork between them is reassuring for clients.

“The aim is for everything to be done in meetings, that empowers the clients and gives them control,” said Mrs Simpson.

“They know nothing is going to happen without them being aware of it. That is one of the things that scares them most - that control is taken away from them.”
