£1.6m contract for tanker firm brings promise of new jobs

A TANKER manufacturer in North Yorkshire has won a £1.6m order – the biggest single contract in the firm’s 10-year history.

Sayers Road Tankers, which is based in Northallerton, has secured the order for Dr Cymru Welsh Water, Swansea, which supplies water, sewerage and trade effluent services to homes, offices and businesses in Wales and parts of England. Its emergency logistics team will use the 25 tankers to maintain customer supplies when it is dealing with bursts or other problems in its network.

Sayers Tankers said more than 10 jobs have been created, and others secured, with the order, which is also supporting its planned expansion this year. Sayers Tankers, which was founded in 1992, has 51 staff and a £6m turnover.

Managing director Cliff Sayers said: “This is the company’s biggest-ever single one-off contract which has created and secured jobs and allowed us to push ahead with expansion plans earlier than we expected.

“We are completing five new manufacturing bays at our existing site at Leeming Bar Industrial Estate, which represents a 30 per cent increase in our shop-floor space, and we have put in a planning application for a new five-bay workshop 200 yards away which will become operational by the autumn and will create at least a further five jobs.”

The firm has gained backing from Yorkshire Bank’s Tees Valley Financial Solutions Centre, as part of its Investing for Growth initiative. Mr Sayers added “We required funding from Yorkshire Bank to buy raw materials to start work on this major contract due to the tight timescale.”

Sayers Road Tankers manufactures and repairs tanks and tankers and provides a hire service, supporting transport operations nationally.
