Outstanding internships win acclaim

SIX businesses and charities with Yorkshire bases, including Bettys and Taylors of Harrogate, have been shortlisted in a national awards scheme for quality of work experience.

Emerald Group Publishing, headquartered in Bingley, has been nominated in the categories for organisations with 10 to 250 employees and for Best Newcomer in the National Council for Work Experience Awards.

Iconic tea producer Bettys and Taylors will compete against The Avalon Group, a Harrogate charity, and Unilever’s Seacroft site for Work Placement of the Year, as nominated by a careers adviser or a placement tutor.

Balfour Beatty’s highways contract in Northallerton, North Yorkshire is competing in the category for firms with over 250 employees – short-term placements section and The Alchemy Exchange, a research and consultancy unit at Sheffield Hallam University has been shortlisted in the category for firms with fewer than 10 staff.

The awards, which are in their eighth year, recognise organisations that provide exceptional student internships. Mike Hill, chief executive of the Higher Education Careers Services Unit, which operates the NCWE said: “As interest in internships has grown, we have watched our awards get more popular.”

The winners will be announced on March 22 at a ceremony in London.
