What was your first job?

Cleaning my dad’s car and our shoes on a Sunday morning.

If not in your present job, what would you like to do?

Rock star or barrister.

What was your worst mistake?

Leaving my band behind to go to university. We made it to the 1981 Northern regional finals of Battle of the Bands but we were beaten into second place by an electro-pop duo (I think it was the Pet Shop Boys).

What would your ideal day be away from the office?

Sunny round of golf followed by a quality meal with family and friends.

What was your best subject at school?

Biology, I’m intrigued by the human body and how it works.

What are your hobbies?

Golf, guitar and crime novels.

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

Treat myself to a house in the country, an exotic holiday and put some aside – I am an investment adviser after all.

What is your top time-saving tip?

Only touch a piece of paper once, unless it has the Queen’s head on it, in which case, hang on to it.

What is your favourite time of day and why?

Dawn, the light on a new day brings such promise.

What is your favourite garment?

Prescription sunglasses.

What is the best thing about being in Yorkshire?

Plain speaking – it’s how us Geordies are raised. And the Dales on the doorstep.

What would you like your epitaph to be?

In the words of Spike Milligan: “I told you I was ill”.
