Net zero: join the conversation and learn about the benefits of Sheffield’s heat zone for local businesses
The future of Sheffield is looking green, with potentially millions of pounds being invested to develop a pioneering heat zoning scheme – energy networks in specific areas which can provide the lowest cost, low-carbon heat where it’s needed – and this is your chance to join the conversation and learn about the benefits for local businesses.
With the UK Government committed to reducing carbon emissions by 2050, heat networks will be called upon to provide almost a fifth of the country’s heat. And our city is among those leading the way, with a new heat zone from 2025.
Energy company E.ON is set to invest billions in new green infrastructure across Europe as cities adopt new district heating networks, bringing sustainable jobs and helping to tackle fuel poverty.
Speakers at the event on November 16 will include Antony Meanwell, E.ON’s Heat Zone Development & Decarbonisation Director, as well as the company’s Strategic Relationship Manager for Heat Zone Development, Jean-Michel Bellas.

Mark Whitworth, Sustainability and Climate Change Service Manager at Sheffield City Council, will outline the benefits of heat zoning and its role in city-wide decarbonisation at the event, along with Mark Woodward from partners Nordic Energy who will explain the benefits it will bring for the city.
At the same time, South Yorkshire is set to become the UK’s first investment zone, creating up to 8,000 new jobs centred on producing clean, green heat, power and flight; tackling ill-health; and harnessing technology. A representative from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority will talk about how the scheme will attract investment by developing a UK-based supply chain and green jobs.
They’ll be joined by Chris Norman, Director of Estates at the Northern General Hospital, where the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been adopting a range of measures to achieve its net zero goals and improve the health and wellbeing of staff and patients.
