I’ll admit there has been the odd day over the last nine years when I’ve questioned it, but if I went back in time to the day when the possibility of an MBO was raised, I would do it all over again.

Are wise investors born or made?

Made, I think. And I also think they become wiser with experience and hindsight.

Do you believe it’s become harder for entrepreneurs to make prudent investments since the crash of 2008?

No, but I think it has made a lot of people scrutinise investment opportunities more closely.

What’s the worst investment you’ve ever made?

I can think of a number of items of clothing I bought – particularly in my younger days - where the money would have been far better left in my pocket.

What advice would you give to entrepreneurs looking to make a major investment?

Do your research. Follow your instincts and believe in yourself, but also be open to input and guidance from professional advisers you trust, ideally who know and understand you well.

Which sectors are likely to offer handsome returns for business investors?

Through our work with Venturefest Yorkshire, we’re seeing businesses who are capitalising on scientific knowledge that are proving very attractive to investors.
