MTL moves into new headquarters with 100 new jobs on way

Defence manufacturer MTL Group has opened a new state-of-the-art factory in a move that will create over 100 new jobs.

The relocation to the new 300,000sq ft building in Rotherham, which was partly funded with a £5m loan from Lloyds Bank Corporate Markets in Sheffield, follows several years of growth that has seen the company’s annual turnover rise to £50m. MTL Group, which laser cuts, bends, machines and fabricates steel, supplies customers including BAE, Caterpillar and Renault Truck Defence.

Managing director Dr Henry Shirman said: “We are proud of our roots here in Yorkshire and proud of our business. Our reputation for quality and service has underpinned our expansion as we grew from one factory to four factories in different locations. The opening of this state-of-the-art facility means we are all able to work on one site and we have provision for future growth and expansion.”

MTL Group has invested in new technology for the new plant – one of the largest lasers in the UK and a 640-tonne robotic press, which is believed to be one of the biggest of its kind in the world. The business will continue to focus on supplying specialist metals to markets including renewable energy.
