With the number of older people in the Kirklees area set to rise by 33 per cent in the next 10 years, it is hoped the new 60-bed care centre in the Oakes area of Huddersfield will help to meet the rising demand for care services.

The development is on the site of a former local authority care centre which will be demolished to make way for the new building.

This development is scheduled for completion in summer 2012 and has been specially designed to provide living and bedroom accommodation for older people. As well as a hairdressing salon, nail bar and cinema, the care centre will also incorporate hi-tech features including a free Wi-Fi service for its residents and visitors.

Meridian’s managing director Susan Firth said: “The Oakes will be a great example of how to provide high quality long-term care to older people.”

Richard Conroy, chief executive of Conroy Brook, added: “We are delighted to be working with Meridian once again to deliver an exceptionally high standard of care provision for the people of Kirklees.

“The development will also bring back to life a redundant site, contributing to the long-term regeneration of the area. Our construction programme will commence this month with the centre able to welcome new residents by next summer.”

Meridian operates 27 care centres in the north of England.
